Prevalence of Diagnosed Psychiatric Disorders Among Adults Who Have Experienced and Internalized Weight Stigma

Experiences and internalization of weight stigma are associated with greater self-reported psychological distress symptoms psychiatric disorders such as depression anxiety. However, little is known about the extent to which individuals who have experienced internalized diagnosed or provided treatment for conditions. The current study aimed characterize prevalence among adults obesity had stigma. Weight-loss treatment-seeking a history experiencing high levels were recruited two clinical trials. In Study 1 (n=84, 83.3% women, 67.9% Black), 25% participants reported lifetime mood disorder. Few (<10%) diagnoses use medications. 2 (n=129, 88.4% 65.1% white), one-third disorder history, 21.7% an anxiety approximately 16-18% reporting diagnoses. both studies, few eating despite rates full- subthreshold symptoms.
